A drawing is not an isolated picture. Read its title block, follow callouts across sheets, compare disciplines, and resolve differences before the work reaches a hold point.

How to walk through a drawing set

  1. 1

    Cover and drawing register

    Confirm project, address, issue purpose, discipline list and latest revision before reading detail.

  2. 2

    Site and civil

    Read boundaries, north, contours, datums, setbacks, access, finished levels, drainage and service routes together.

  3. 3

    Floor plans

    Follow dimensions, wall types, openings, room tags, section markers and detail callouts.

  4. 4

    Elevations

    Connect exterior materials, openings, heights, roof form and finished ground to the plan.

  5. 5

    Sections

    Use the vertical cut to understand levels, structure, envelope build-ups and hidden junctions.

  6. 6

    Details

    Trace each callout back to its location and check whether architectural, structural and supplier details agree.

  7. 7

    Structural and bracing

    Use only the engineer's or consented current issue. Track member tags, fixings, loads, bracing lines and observation hold points.

  8. 8

    Drainage and services

    Coordinate routes, inverts, falls, access points, penetrations, equipment and clearances across disciplines.

    Schedules and legends

    Decode doors, windows, finishes, fixtures, symbols, abbreviations and specification references.

    Title block and revisions

    The drawing number, status, revision and issue date determine whether a drawing is safe to build from.

Five checks before work starts

  1. 1. Status: Is it approved or issued for the intended work?
  2. 2. Revision: Does it match the register and the team's current issue?
  3. 3. Coordination: Do architecture, structure, civil, services and product details agree?
  4. 4. Buildability: Can the sequence, access, tolerances and interfaces actually work?
  5. 5. Evidence: What must be inspected or photographed before concealment?
